Child Travel Programmes
Our standard questionnaires are appropriate for young people but not for children. Nevertheless, many organisations have expressed their interest in an evaluation tool for child travel programmes (children aged approx. 8 – 12 years) and for local summer and holiday programmes.
The steering committee started to investigate the subject in 2006. A pilot study with more than 700 children during the summer 2007 showed that an evaluation based on simple questionnaires is quite applicable. Additional tests with revised questionnaires in 2008 and 2009 confirmed this thesis.
In 2008 the procedure was adopted for local summer and holiday programmes (without overnight stays) in the area Bad Kreuznach. A first “prototype” of the questionnaire for supervisors (adapted for child travel programmes) was discussed during a second meeting in March 2009. A baseline survey for the development of questionnaires for child travel programmes is planned for 2010 (provided that funding for the study can be achieved). In the course of the study “Interkulturelle Kompetenz durch international Kinderbegegnung” (Intercultural Competences through International Child Encounters), which was carried out by the German Youth Institute, several organisations expressed their interest in respective questionnaires for international child encounters.
However, a standard questionnaire for children, which is usable by the general public, is only achievable through a scientific procedure, based on a baseline survey, similar to the one that was carried out for the youth specific questionnaires.
Heike Peters coordinates and manages (together with Günter Kistner and Stephanie Otto) the division “questionnaire for child travel programmes”. Head of research is Wolfgang Ilg. The team is open for new members.
